Grade 2 Writers in Action: Creativity, Structure, and Storytelling
Second grade writers have been busy this spring developing their narrative writing skills through creativity, collaboration, and a lot of imagination
Building Stories from Big Ideas
Students have been designing their own story plots and bringing their ideas to life through narrative writing. One especially fun inspiration came from "If You Give a Mouse a Pancake", which sparked creative twists, silly scenarios, and lots of enthusiasm for storytelling.
As students explored the style of Laura Numeroff, one playful observation summed it up perfectly:
"If you ask a second grader to write like Laura Numeroff, you might just have to make them pancakes… and be ready for questions about real maple syrup!"
Thinking Like Writers Through Puzzles
To deepen their understanding of writing structure, students worked together to assemble large puzzles. After completing them, they reflected on how puzzle-building connects to writing a summary.
They discovered that just as every puzzle piece must be in the right place, a summary must include the most important details in the correct order. They also noticed that the image on the puzzle box is a smaller version of the completed puzzle—just like a summary is a shortened version of a full text. This hands-on connection helped students better understand how strong writing is structured and organized.
