Making Progress in Literacy

In the fall of 2013 we announced our initiative to focus on developing our literacy program during the 2013-2014 school year.  Since that time we have indeed made great strides in our program!  First, last November we hired Mrs. Whitney, our librarian. She worked diligently last year to organize the library and to add new books to our shelves. Last year she was able to meet weekly with students in Kindergarten to Grade 3, and Mrs. Attardo met with Grades 4 and 5 every other week. This year all of our elementary classes meet with Mrs. Whitney for a library lesson each week.

Last year we implemented our new reading program, Foundations & Frameworks (F&F) in Grades 3 through 8.  With our first year behind us, we have already seen improvements in the reading and writing of our students.  Our teachers have further developed their plans for this year, and each class will see an addition of new novels and even a few new units.

All of our grades continue to focus on the 6+1 Traits of Writing as we seek to develop strong writing skills across the content areas.

Finally, this year we are committed to continuing to develop strong readers, writers and critical thinkers!  Literacy is once again one of this year’s strategic initiatives. Check out these videos for more information about our literacy initiatives!
